Location-aware advertising targets taxi commuters in the iCABTV Mobile Infotainment system from UZoneMedia. This system connects to the internet using 3.5G networks and offers a one-stop portal for entertainment, shopping and dining newsbits. Coupons from the screen can be downloaded to mobile devices via bluetooth. The location-aware feature allows the user to find places and events of interest at or around the destination (GPS positioning). UZOneMedia is partnering with Comfort DeGro to implement this taxi-based ‘in-flight entertainment system’. There are plans for the company to extend its outreach to bus and MRT commuters too. A

Scope of Green IT June 11, 2008
Posted by hercers in Green IT.add a comment
Green IT is the environmentally responsible and the effective use of computers and related resources. Such practices includes implementation of energy-efficient use of central processing units (CPUs), servers, peripherals as well as reduced resource consumption, datacenter management strategy and proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste)
Fueled by recent trends towards sustainability, the modern use of the terms refers to systematic approaches to using computing technology efficiently. These include issues such as addressing electronic waste, regulatory compliance, telecommuting policies, virtualization of server resources, cost accounting of energy use, datacenter energy crisis and thin client solutions. Green IT can address the burning issue of rising energy cost and increasing environmental damage cost by companies, these issues are of major concern in most companies now. They will continue to drive significant increase in the cost of living and will continue to drive up the cost of doing business.
Reducing energy consumption will become an environmental imperative, as well as an economic necessity.

Increased Awareness of CSR Drives Spending June 11, 2008
Posted by hercers in Green IT.add a comment
Asia Pacific CEOs are investing in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at a much faster rate than their global peers, says a global survey.
The IBM 2008 Global CEO Study found that 42% of Asian businesses will spend more on CSR over the next three years, compared to a global average of 25%.
Foreign-owned businesses in Greater China are investments in CSR even further to 52%. The CEO of one Chinese company said the firm had invested “twice as much in CSR and environment initiatives as we have in the previous 30 years combined.”
At the same time, 81% of APAC and 84% of Greater China CEOs said they had high expectations of CSR, compared to 69% globally, the report found.
The study underlines the very different business context in Asia-Pacific and in particular the sharply-growing awareness of environmental issues in mainland China and Hong Kong.
The number of Asian CEOs citing the environment as a major change driver has increased from 8% to 21% since 2004, the survey found. By comparison, just 12% of CEOs in the Americas regard it as an important change driver.
With talent in short supply, employers’ CSR reputations were an important tool to attract employees and was also critical to maintaining market share. “Consumers will increasingly make choices based on the sources of the products they buy, even the ingredients and processes used in making these products,” said one consumer products CEO.
Steven Davidson, an IBM Global Business Services vice-president, said Asia Pacific CEO see CSR “as a key and differentiating component of their business strategy.”
The study found that Asia-Pacific CEOs see substantial change ahead for their companies - 84% across Asia Pacific and 89% in Greater China - but they are more confident about their ability to manage change than their counterparts elsewhere.
The Global CEO Study was based on interviews with 1,130 CEOs conducted by IBM in late 2007 and early 2008.
Replacing Screensavers with Blank Screens June 11, 2008

Telstra says it has saved 646 tonnes of CO2 by switching off 36,000 desktop and laptop PCs.
Telstra IT staff removed corporate screensavers from all Windows XP laptops and desktops computers and replaced with a black screensaver, the company said. The move had the same impact on carbon emission as removing nearly 140 cars from Australian roads for a year, Telstra said.
Telstra Property Director Vito Chiodo said screensavers use as much energy as a full screen of work and also require considerable processing energy. He said screensavers had been designed to conserve older CRT computer screens, but were not required for today’s LCD screens.
Telstra said its energy management programs had saved 173,998 tonnes CO2 equivalent during 2006/07, which is the equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from around 18,655 average Australian homes for a year.
