Such practices includes implementation of energy-efficient use of central processing units (CPUs), servers, peripherals as well as reduced resource consumption, datacenter management strategy and proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste)

Fueled by recent trends towards sustainability, the modern use of the terms refers to systematic approaches to using computing technology efficiently. These include issues such as addressing electronic waste, regulatory compliance, telecommuting policies, virtualization of server resources, cost accounting of energy use, datacenter energy crisis and thin client solutions. Green IT can address the burning issue of rising energy cost and increasing environmental damage cost by companies, these issues are of major concern in most companies now.
